Week 30 in Class Ra

Class: Reception Year: 2022 - 2023

This week in Ra we have been learning all about meerkats and the Kalahari Desert. We have been reading the book Meerkat Mail by Emily Gravett. At the start of the week we had a very important parcel arrive in Reception. The parcel was from the Kalahari Desert and inside was Sunny the meerkat. We located Botswana and the Kalahari Desert on Google Maps and then located Holmes Chapel. We spoke about how we could get between the two places and what type of transport we would need. The children compared the Kalahari Desert to Holmes Chapel and discussed why they are different. We looked at the features of Holmes Chapel and spoke about where we enjoy to go in Holmes Chapel. This helped us write a postcard from Holmes Chapel to Sunny to tell him all about where we live. We all enjoyed meeting Sunny the meerkat and having him in our classroom.

At the start of the week we were very lucky in Ra and met our new school dog Skye. Skye was very well behaved and sat beautifully for a treat. The children enjoyed meeting her and we are all looking forward to seeing her around school!

In Literacy this week we wrote postcards to Sunny telling him about Holmes Chapel and places we enjoy to go. The children wrote about the park, Costa coffee and the primary school. On Friday we looked at the postcards in the story. He spoke about how Sunny feels when he decides to leave home and then why he might want to go back home. We discussed what Sunny could do if he visited Holmes Chapel and the places the children would show him.

In P.E this week the children have practised their dribbling skills and throwing and catching skills. The children practised carefully dribbling the ball around the cones using different parts of their feet to move the ball in the correct direction. The children also practised throwing bean bags into hoops and bouncing a ball on the floor and catching it.

In Maths this week we have continued learning about teen numbers. We have practised partitioning teen numbers and using our fingers to show how many 10’s and how many ones they contain. We practised putting 19 and 20 on a part-whole model. On Friday the children worked in partners to place 19 and 20 on two ten frames. We spoke about what we noticed when there were 19 cubes and then what we noticed when there were 20 cubes. We practised our subitising skills by recognising that when two ten frames are full we know it is 20 without needing to count.

This week’s VIP has been Finlay. Finlay is a kind and happy member of our class.  Finlay particularly loves P.E and playtime! Well done Finlay! We enjoyed looking at the blue teams show and tell this week. Next week, it will be green group’s turn for show and tell. Please could the green team bring in their show and tell bags on Friday morning.

Next week we have our Reception school trip to Blue Planet on Wednesday. We will be reading The Rainbow Fish next week in Ra and learning all about the ocean.
