Week 28 in Class Ra

Class: Reception Year: 2023 - 2024

Good afternoon all,

This week in Ra we have been learning about treasure chests and describing the treasure in the Pirate’s chest. We have also learnt all about sharks and made our own shark fact file. We learnt all about Blue Planet and what a shark’s habitat looks like. The children have enjoyed learning lots of interesting facts about sharks and fish.

In Literacy this we have focused on writing sentences with adjectives to describe the treasure. The children created a list of adjectives as a class. They then independently wrote their own sentences. We have also practised orally composing a sentence about sharks to tell the class. We then told the class our sentences and the children practised writing their sentence on their fact file. Some examples of the sentences the children wrote are written below;

The shark is fast and strong.

The shark has sharp, big teeth.

Sharks hunt for food at night.

In Maths this week, the children have continued to develop their subitising skills (seeing the quantity without counting) in increasingly complex arrangements. Some arrangements are easier to subitise than others – e.g. a set of 6 dots arranged in a structured die pattern that exposes the double-3 pattern is easier to recognise than a random arrangement of 6 dots. A key focus this week was to use the children’s developing understanding of doubles to support their subitising skills.

In P.E we have continued our first unit of dance. We are learning how to use our body and create simple themed related shapes, movements and actions. We have learnt simple actions to go along with our seasons. The children then created different movements and put together a simple routine. The children practised creating movements for the four seasons.

On Friday this week we investigated capacity. We used water outside and different containers to investigate “What holds more?” The children estimated what container they thought would hold more water. We then used cups to see how much water the containers could hold. We spoke about whether the container was full, half full, nearly empty or empty.

Our V.I.P this week has been Molly. Molly enjoys drawing and P.E. Well done Molly! We enjoyed looking at the green teams show and tell this week.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend and we will see you next week. Next week we will be learning about The Rainbow Fish.
