Week 26 in Class Ra

Class: Reception Year: 2022 - 2023

This week in Ra we have had lots of Easter fun! We made Easter baskets, Easter cards, painted daffodils and even made our own Easter cakes! On Tuesday in our Science lesson we looked at changing states and investigated melting chocolate. This was very useful when it came to making our own Easter cakes. The children investigated whether a frozen chocolate or a room temperature chocolate button melted quicker in their hands. We also investigated different ways of melting the button and how hotter hands melted the buttons quicker than colder hands. The children even predicted that exercise was a fantastic way of warming their hands up and then consequently melting the button at a faster rate. On Thursday and Friday we made our Easter cakes and used heat to melt the chocolate. The chocolate was then put in a fridge to set and the children watched it change from a liquid to a solid.

In Literacy this week we have continued to read the book 'What the Ladybird Heard' by Julia Donaldson. The children wrote the sentence ‘The ladybird heard the…’. The class then chose an animal from our story to complete the sentence. We also thought about alternative ways of trapping the robbers in the story. The children worked together to plan and design a trap to protect the prize cow from Lanky Len and Hefty Hugh. On Friday we used a hot seat to interview Lanky Len and Hefty Hugh and ask them how they felt when they were caught by the animals on the farm. We had some fantastic acting and interview questions, well done Ra!

In P.E this week we practised our balancing and jumping skills again. We reviewed how to jump safely bending our knees to help us land. We practised balancing along a bench and throwing and catching a ball at the same time. This is fantastic for our balancing skills and hand eye coordination skills. We also practised our jumping on floor ladders. The children really enjoyed attempting the monkey bars and I was very impressed with their upper body strength. Keep up the hard work Ra!

In Maths this week, we have learnt to subtract 1 and 2 from a given amount. At the start of the week we modelled subtracting by 1 and jumping back by 1 on a number track. The children practised this in partners on the carpet and practised writing the number sentences for each example. We also practised jumping back by 2 and how this changes our number sentence. It was important to look at real life examples of subtraction as well such as food being taken away from a plate at a picnic and how many items are left.

This week’s VIP has been James. James is a kind and confident member of our class, he enjoys playing tag with his friends. James particularly loves Maths and P.E. Well done James! We enjoyed looking at the green teams show and tell this week.

We hope you all have a lovely Easter and we look forward to seeing the children next term!
