Week 25 in Class Ra

Class: Reception Year: 2022 - 2023

This week in Ra we have read the book 'What the Ladybird Heard' by Julia Donaldson. We enjoyed looking at all the animals that appear in the story. We looked at examples of maps and how the robbers in the book needed a map to find the cow. We created a class map and the children labelled it. We then went outside and drew our own maps of the playground. On Tuesday we created our own ladybird collage pictures. The children used their cutting and sticking skills to create grass, flowers, clouds and a ladybird. We also looked at maps and identified different features such as mountains, rivers, roads and houses. The children enjoyed looking at a map of Holmes Chapel and our school. We have looked at maps of Britain, maps of school and maps of the farm.

In Literacy this week the children wrote the sentence ‘On the map I can see…”. The children also practised spelling and writing the farm animals from our story. We drew our own class pictures of all the animals and learnt the Makaton for each animal. In Phonics this week we have practised reading 'ing' words and revisited some of our tricky words from last term.

In P.E this week we practised our balancing and jumping skills again. We reviewed how to jump safely bending our knees to help us land. We practised balancing along a bench and using her arms to stabilise us. We also practised using our upper body strength to pull ourselves along a bench. The children really enjoyed using the apparatus to practise their climbing this week.

In Maths this week, we have learnt our days of the week. On Monday we read ‘The Hungry Caterpillar’ and learnt what the caterpillar ate on each day. The children worked in their colour teams to correctly order the days of the week. We also learnt about different times of the day and discussed what we do in the morning and what we do in the afternoon. The children looked at our visual timetable and worked in their colour teams to create their own school timetable, focusing on what we do in the morning and in the afternoon (for example we have our Phonics lesson in the morning). On Thursday we looked at Day and Night and what activities happen in the day compared to at night. The children worked in their colour teams to sort out images into day and night. On Friday we learnt about different ways we can tell the time and looked at the hands on a clock. The children worked in pairs to show different times on a clock using the small hand to point to the hour.

This week’s VIP has been Liliarna. Liliarna is a kind and polite member of our class, she enjoys playing with her friends in the kitchen and outside area. Liliarna particularly loves Art and phonics. Well done! We enjoyed looking at the blue teams show and tell this week. Next week, it will be green group’s turn for show and tell. Please could the green team bring in their show and tell bags on Friday morning.

We hope you have a lovely weekend and we'll see you next week when we will start learning about Easter!
