Week 24 in Class Ra

Class: Reception Year: 2022 - 2023

This week in Ra we have looked at Zog by Julia Donaldson. The children have thought about dragons and what features they have. We have described dragons using adjectives and wrote our own sentences about dragons. The children also wrote a sentence about their school trip last week to see Zog at the theatre. We spoke about the emotions we see in Zog and how he feels at different points in the story. We linked this to The Colour Monster and the work we have been doing on emotions so far this year in Reception. In the story Princess Pearl wants to be a doctor so we thought about doctors and nurses and all the amazing things they do to help us. We created a word bank of adjectives to describe a doctor or a nurse like “caring” and “kind”. We were very lucky to have a paramedic come and talk to us on Friday and tell us all about her role. Some of the children were very lucky and were chosen to try on her special helmet and coat.

In Literacy this week the children wrote the sentence “I went to see Zog and it was…” choosing an adjective to describe their experience. We also practised our handwriting on Thursday and using our finger spaces. I was very impressed with how fantastic the children sentences were, with finger spaces, capital letters and a full stop.

In P.E this week we practised our balancing and jumping skills. We learnt how to jump safely bending our knees to help us land. We practised balancing along a bench and using her arms to stabilise us. We also practised crawling along a frame using our feet and hands to support us.

In Maths this week, we learnt about doubles. We looked at ladybirds and making doubles on the two parts of their body. We explained what a double is and made doubles on our fingers. In partners we used ladybird templates to make our doubles and practised subitising to say the total amount.

In Science this week, we looked at hygiene and how we can care for ourselves. We spoke about the importance of washing our hands to avoid spreading germs and making ourselves and others unwell.

On Friday it was Saint Patrick’s Day. We learnt all about Saint Patrick’s Day and why it is celebrated. We also were very lucky and watched Year 3 perform an Irish dance. Mrs Henderson played an Irish jig on her violin for us and we all had a dance and sing along. It was also Red Nose Day so were wore red to raise money for Comic Relief. Thank you to everyone who helped us raise money as a school and support people in need across the world.

This week’s VIP has been Jack. Jack is a cheerful and polite member of our class, he always comes into school with a big smile on his face. Jack particularly loves P.E and football. Well done Jack! We enjoyed looking at the red teams show and tell this week. Next week, it will be blue group’s turn for show and tell. Please could the blue team bring in their show and tell bags on Friday morning.

We hope you have a lovely weekend and we'll see you next week.
