Week 23 in Class Ra

Class: Reception Year: 2022 - 2023

This week in Ra we have looked at our Earth and pollution. We have investigated what is pollution and what can we do to help reduce pollution. We learnt about the five oceans and looked at what sort of things are polluting our oceans. The children really enjoyed watching how a beautiful beach was ruined by rubbish left behind by some children who had a picnic. We spoke about the importance of cleaning our beaches and oceans to protect the animals that live there.

In Literacy this week we looked at the book “The Tiny Crab is a Tidy Crab” by Paula Bowles. In the story the Tidy Crab helps to clear rubbish from the beach. The children enjoyed composing and writing sentences about the crab from the story. We also looked at the different parts of the Earth (Land, oceans, lakes, rivers, mountains, ice). We explored what animals live in our oceans.

In Phonics this week, we revisited the digraph “er” and the trigraph “air”. We practised reading words which included these phonemes. We also revisited double letters for example “mm” in “hammer”.

On Wednesday we went to see Zog at the theatre. The children had a fantastic time and really enjoyed going on the bus. Thank you to those parents who volunteered to help.

In P.E this week we practised our balancing and jumping skills. We learnt how to jump safely bending our knees to help us land. We practised balancing along a bench and using her arms to stabilise us. We also practised balancing a bean bag on our head whilst moving around the cones.

In Maths this week, we learnt about number pairs to 10. In partners the children rolled a dice and then put the correct amount of counters on their ten frame. The children then worked out how many more counters were required to fill in the ten frame and make 10. We also practised sharing out fruit between 10 teddies, checking we had enough fruit for each teddy. The children practised recognising numbers on a ten frame using their subitising skills.

In Science this week, we looked at the animals and their habitats. We spoke the need to respect and care for the natural environment and all living things. We looked at both wild animals and those in captivity/those that have been domesticated for farming. We investigated why animals are important and how we can keep them safe. We spoke about deforestation and how some animals lose their habitat.

This week’s VIP has been Landon. Landon is a caring and happy member of our class, he always comes into school with a big smile on his face. Landon particularly loves phonics and reading. Well done Landon! We enjoyed looking at the yellow teams show and tell this week. Next week, it will be red group’s turn for show and tell. Please could the red team bring in their show and tell bags on Friday morning.

We hope you have a lovely weekend and we'll see you next week!
