Week 18 in Class Ra

Class: Reception Year: 2023 - 2024

Good afternoon everyone,

This week we have continued our topic ‘Space and Sky’. We have learnt all about the moon and the 1969 moon landing. We learnt all about the International Space Station. We spoke about what astronauts do there. We thought about some questions for an astronaut and what we would like to find out about the ISS. The class came up with some fantastic questions for an astronaut. We had a go at testing out how craters are made on the moon. We compelted an experiment by weighing the different objects to see if the weights of the objects are correlated to the size of craters. We used flour to represent the sufrance of the moon and stones to represent meteorites.

In Literacy this week we have learnt facts about the moon. The children created a list of facts in their partners. We learnt all about Apollo 11 and the astronauts who went to the moon in 1969. We learnt the names of the three astronauts who went and wrote the sentence “They go to the moon. The class practised using the tricky wood ‘they’.

In Maths this week we have learnt all about circles, triangles, squares, and rectangles. For each shape we discussed how many sides and corners it has.

In music this week we watched a video of The Folsom Lake Symphony performing the "Theme from Mission Impossible" by Lalo Schifrin. The children learnt what a conductor does in an orchestra. We had a go at pretending to be a conductor using our hands to keep all the instruments in time.

We started our P.E lesson playing a zoo game. The children had to practise moving around the hall as different animals. We particularly enjoyed pretending to be a giraffe and stretching our bodies up. In P.E this week we learnt to safely perform a sideways roll. We also practised a forwards roll and learnt the importance of tucking in our chins to our chests.

Our V.I.P this week has been Florence. Florence’s favourite part of school is phonics. Well done Florence! We enjoyed looking at the red teams show and tell this week. Next week it will be yellow group’s turn for show and tell. Please could the yellow team bring in their show and tell bags on Friday morning.

Have a lovely weekend and we will see you next week!
