Week 17 in Class Ra

Class: Reception Year: 2023 - 2024

Good afternoon everyone,

This week we have continued our topic ‘Space and Sky’. We have read the story ‘The Way Back Home’ by Oliver Jeffers. In the story the boy gets stuck on the moon and has to work out a way to get back home. As a class we discussed ways the boy could get home and predicted what might happen in the story. We had a go at designing a space rocket to help the boy fly home.

On Tuesday we had a go at the ‘rocket bottle thrust’ experiment. The children had to make and decorate a cone and used bottles to see which one would go the highest. On Friday we used our measuring, cutting and sticking skills to make a rocket. The class very carefully measured the card to fit around their tube, cut the windows using tinfoil, and made a cone for the top. We then used our scissors to make fire to add to the base of our rockets.

In Literacy this week the children wrote a list of what they would take to space. The children wrote “I will put a ……. in my bag.” They then choose an item they would like to take. We watched a video of an astronaut in space and he told us all things he needed to pack in his bag.

In Maths this week we explored ways to represent numbers using the number pattern (die pattern). The children will secured their understanding of the pairs of numbers that make 5, and then use double dice frames to begin to explore 6 and 7 as numbers that are composed of ‘5 and a bit’. The children had a go at building towers with 6 and 7 blocks. We also used our "flashy fingers" this week to show different ways of making 6 and 7.

In P.E we learnt two different types of rolls. We learnt how to safely perform a log roll and an egg roll. We also revisited jumping and how to land safely with our arms out for balance. We then created a sequence with one jump and one roll. I was very impressed with everyone’s egg rolls.

Our V.I.P this week has been Jenson. Jenson loves P.E and playing in the construction area with his friends! Well done Jenson! We enjoyed looking at the green teams show and tell this week. Next week it will be red group’s turn for show and tell. Please could the red team bring in their show and tell bags on Friday morning.

Next week, we will be learning about the moon and the moon landings. Have a lovely weekend and we will see you next week!

Our trip to Jodrell Bank is coming up soon (2nd Feb). Thank you to those who offered to help on the day. We have sent home slips tonight to say whether we require your help or not on this occasion.
