Week 17 in Class R

Class: Reception Year: 2023 - 2024

This week, the children have been learning all about rockets. The chldren started the week by reading the story The Way Back Home where a boy takes a trip into space and has to find his way home. The children have worked this week on thinking about what we could take to space in our rockets. They have used their phonics to spell their space trip list. Teh children came up with some great ideas using the phonemes we have learnt in phonics recently in phonics.

In maths this week, we have been looking at numbers using the '5 and a bit more' method. We have looked at showing the numbers 6 and 7 in this way on die frames and on our fingers and using cubes.

For our space unit of work, we have been learning about rockets, learning how the moon orbits the Earth and how the Earth orbits this sun. This has lead us to talk about day, night, months and years. We discussed how the moon can look very different at different times of the month. We have learnt crescent moon, half moon and full moon. The children looked at a moon calendar and we discussed how you could look at the moon each night and draw how it looks to see the changes over the month. On Friday, we had a teachnology lesson where the chlldren made their own rockets. We learnt how to roll, measure, cut and fix with glue and tape. We think these look great and the children followed the instructions really well.

In Pe, we learnt two new rolls: egg roll and log roll. The children worked very hard to perform these and hold their bodies in the correct position.

We had a lovely show and tell this week too with lots of sharing about trips at Christmas time, swimming achievements and fun toys from home. Thank you all for sharing!

Our trip to Jodrell Bank is coming up soon (2nd Feb). Thank you to those who offered to help on the day. We have sent home slips tonight to say whether we require your help or not on this occasion.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.
