Week 17 in Class R

Class: Reception Year: 2022 - 2023

What a fun and frosty week!

This week, we have continued to learn about Lunar New Year. We have linked this to maths and music as we have followed a pattern to create beats on musical instruments and performed them during our dragon dance parade. We talked about the word parade and looked at the dragons and lion dance parades that are part of the Lunar New Year ceclebrations. The children have focused on team work during this task as they worked together in colour groups to become the dragons and parade to the music moving up and down in a wave motion and following each other closely to keep their dragon together.

In handwriting, we have looked at the letters p, g and q. You will find a handwriting booklet in your bookbags this week to practise letter formation at home.

Mrs Noble showed the children some pieces of art from the artist Kandinsky. The children identified the shapes used to make the work and worked together in groups to produce their own kandinsky inspired piece of artwork.

In maths, we have looked at the composition of the number 6 and 7 using the 5 and a bit method. The children have been exploring how this looks on a ten frame to create a concept image in their minds: this is to help them to visually recognise that 6 is made of 5 and 1, etc. We have also worked more of the part-part-whole method. We explored this physically by using Mr Potato head to see all the different parts of him that makes him a whole. The children talked to their partners and shared with the class about what is a part of them and how it all makes a whole.

On Thursday, we had a lovely afternoon in the snow. First, the children went to the woodland area to collect items to use to decorate snowmen and them we went onto the very snowy field. We had a great time learning how to roll a ball of snow to make it get bigger and bigger. We used some great mathematical language of bigger, heavy, too small, etc. The children worked hard together to roll around a VERY large snowball in all directions.

Next week, we will be starting our learning on Space. We will looking at the solar system and how the planets orbit the Sun and also learning about gravity, linking it to our mathematical language heavy and light.

We hope that you have a lovely weekend
