Week 9 in Class R

Class: Reception Year: 2022 - 2023

This week, we have been celebrating and learning all about Diwali.

We started the week listening and acting out the story of Rama and Sita. Mrs Vaja shared how she celebrates at home with her family and friends, the food she eats and we even got to try on some traditional dresses and saris. Mrs Vaja showed us how her home is decorated with rangoli patterns in colourful rice and sand and she even decorated Miss Wootton’s hand with henna patterns. The children have designed their own henna patterns and made rangoli patterns with shapes on the floor.

On Thursday, we observed a minute silence. The children were very sensible and stayed very quiet. We have talked about the importance of the poppy and why we wear them. We look forward to seeing some of them at the remembrance parade on Sunday.

In literacy, we have been looking at rangoli patterns and Diwali decoration. The children have been composing their own sentences and at the end of the week we have tried hard to write a short sentence. We are working hard on our letter formation, using the visuals from Little Wandle to help us to remember how to write them.

In maths, we have spent the week looking at making different patterns. We have done this through sound, body percussion and making our own patterns with nature objects and colourful cubes. This is something easy to practise at home (big, small, small/ red, green, red, green/etc).

On Thursday afternoon, the children enjoyed some Bollywood dancing in PE. Mrs Vaja showed us some dance moves and played some of her favourite songs.

We have enjoyed listening to everyone’s show and tell this, from theatre trip to monster trucks, it sparked lots of conversation and the children have been asking some great questions. Next week, we invite the yellow group to bring in their treasures.

Have a great weekend everyone!
